10 Gigabit for the Broad Market
The Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X540 is the latest innovation in Intel's leadership to drive 10 Gigabit Ethernet into the broader server market. This adapter hosts Intel's latest Ethernet silicon, the Intel® Ethernet Controller X540, which is used by many OEMs as a single chip solution for LAN on Motherboard (LOM) to deliver 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) on the latest server platforms.
10GBASE-T Simplifies the Transition to 10 GbE
The Intel X540 family of products works with existing networks today. It works with legacy Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switches and Cat 6A cabling. Install the Intel X540 adapter into a server and the auto-negotiation between 1 GbE and 10 GbE provides the necessary backwards compatibility that most customers require for a smooth transition and easy migration to 10 GbE. When time and budget allows, 10GBASE-T switches can be added any time to experience the full benefits of 10 GbE.

Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: They work at 10 gb
Cons: One failed.
No yotta mark. not sure if these are even real cards.

Gigabit Ethernet Controller Driver
Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Works and uses intell drivers
Cons: Caused weird PCIe errors on boot in server. Have 2 other x540
Missing yotta mark sticker on card all Intel adapters are supposed to have this to verify that are authentic.
Missing yotta mark sticker on card all Intel adapters are supposed to have this to verify that are authentic.
Other Thoughts: I have 2 other intel x540-t2 adapters what work in the same server with out causing the PCIe errors. They both have the yotta mark sticker.
Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Very fast and drivers are built-in to Windows 2012. Works in a Thecus NAS. Bought 3 for a cluster.
Cons: If the card gets hot, it will disconnect the links and shows the link as disabled in Windows. Not for use in an open case or in a room above 80F. Probably good to have a side fan installed or installed next to a graphics card with a fan.
Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Easy installation, fast, cheapest solution for 10G.
Cons: 10G is still too expensive overall and 10G switches are practically unaffordable for home and very small business use.
Corporate networking types will look down on you for using copper instead of fiber.

Other Thoughts: I bought a pair of these to connect a Dell T620 server running VMware ESXi 5.1 to a Thecus TopTower 6850 NAS. Both devices recognized the card without having to install any drivers.
The cards are direct-connected via a 25' Cat 6A cable. Throughput can exceed 600MB/sec.
Today, I tried setting the ESXi vSwich and port group to an MTU of 9000 and did the same on the NAS. This took literally one minute. Throughput topped 914MB/sec at one point since. That's megaBYTES not megaBITS!
Have a third card on order to connect another Thecus NAS to the same server.
